12 Winter Food That Reminds Me Of My Childhood

I love how our winter foods are all packed with natural oils, vitamins and a whole lot of good fat(what comes from ghee) and other nutrients. While carrots are healthy and help in regulating the bodys sugar levels, ghee boosts physical health and provides warmth to the body during the winter season. These are a great source of warmth to the body during winters because of their special ingredients. Traditionally, in Gujarati households, the juicy, slightly sweet and nutty emerald grains are steamed, topped with lime juice, salt and peppery sev and eaten as a snack through winter. Just when the weather changes and you find it hard to get up in the morning and those 5 minutes more actually turn out to be a good 15 minutes more you know that winter has set in.  For me winter means a whole lot of food that is specific to winter. Without a doubt being a gujju my love for food and everything seasonal is all normal and expected.

I love how our winter foods are all packed with natural oils, vitamins and a whole lot of good fat(what comes from ghee) and other nutrients. I am so happy that my kids are just as passionate about food and I want them to try everything seasonal. Food is an integral part of parenting one that drives you crazy and at at the same time is packed with love. 1. Gajar ka Halwa: A famous yummy treat that is found on most restaurant menus. Gajar ka Halwa is also a favourite at weddings. While carrots are healthy and help in regulating the body’s sugar levels, ghee boosts physical health and provides warmth to the body during the winter season.

 
 2. Undhyo:  A Gujarati mixed vegetable dish, undhiyu is traditionally cooked in earthen pots on fire. This seasonal dish is prepared during winters when peas, beans, and eggplants are grown in Gujarat.

 
 3. Adadiya: Adadiya is famous Gujarati Winter special sweet. The ingredients in Adadiya which helps to keep body warm during winter. Adadiya is made of ghee, almond, pistachios, nuts, soonth, methi, milk and gund.

4. Gond ke Ladoo: These sweet dish is a traditional sweet that is more popular in north India. Made of edible gum extracts, ‘gond’ is known to be a warm food that provides energy to the body to fight the winter chills.

5.  Sweet Potato: Don’t know if this one is my favourite or the daughters? Cant help but think of Delhi where its roasted on the sigdi, peeled and then served hot with some chaat masala. Try lots of different recipes with this one like tikkis and chaat or just eat it plain with some chaat masala.

6. Date & Dry Fruit Ladoos: Dates and Dry Fruits are healthy and tasty. However they add a great taste when added to laddoos. These are a great source of warmth to the body during winters because of their special ingredients.

7. Black Til Chikkis : Black til can be consumed in many forms and it is rich in iron. Black til chikki is eaten in winters because of the same reason.

8. Ponkh: A Surti specialty, ponkh, or tender green jowar is a famous food in the winters. Traditionally, in Gujarati households, the juicy, slightly sweet and nutty emerald grains are steamed, topped with lime juice, salt and peppery sev and eaten as a snack through winter.

9. Kand/Purple Yam chips: Purple Yam is an earthly, healthy and delicious food. They taste sweet and is a variety of a true yam, . It has rough textured, dark colored skin and a light purple colored flesh.  It is known as Kand in India and is a popular dish during winters.

10. Bajre ki Roti: This one is extremely good for winters and even though you can have it round the year it gives a perfect roti option. Serve it with ghee and jaggery or with baingan bharta and udad ki dal. But make them try it if they haven’t already.

11. Makke di roti and Sarson da saag: A very famous Punjabi Dish eaten during winters. Makke di roti and Sarson da saag is a winter combination you will definitely enjoy.

12. Groundnuts: Groundnuts or Mungfalli as we call it is a healthy food to eat in the winter season. Groundnut is healthy otherwise as well however during winter it is a must eat. Roasted groundnuts taste the best.
