Confinement Period: What Exactly Is it?

The confinement period is followed as a 40-day tradition in most Indian homes after a woman delivers her baby. This is done to help the new mother heal and also allow her mind and body to rest. Women go through bouts of emotions and mood swings after they deliver and this phase helps them sail through the battle. Apart from the emotional well-being, the new mommy also gets time to bond with her baby, figure out A-Z of breastfeeding and get a hang of the daily routine.

These traditions also stem from the fact that stress can play a major role in the new mother’s breast milk supply and her state of mind, leading to postpartum depression. Health and dietary restrictions are also followed during this time, depending on the kind of delivery the mother has had.

However, it looks like times are changing and apart from going all out with their baby bump, women are also ready to skip confinement.

What do you think? Is confinement an absolute necessity or can it be avoided? Tell us in the comments below.
