Nothing beats the joy of discovering a great book, that gives you a new perspective or helps us know more about ourselves and what more we can be. My son is currently deep in the atlas and the book of knowledge, dinosaurs, aeroplane facts etc. While he occasionally reads fiction his heart is bent towards the factoid world. His daily conversations are about amazing facts that simply stump us all.

While we quite enjoy that, I also noticed that his writing style too is much like that. So I felt it was time to nudge him to discover more, get more descriptive and imaginative. It was clearly time for more Roald Dahl, J K Rowling Enid Blyton etc. My daughter is younger and is learning to read, so a variety of books is clearly the need of the hour.

The search to introduce them both to more helped me discover some unique gems, that I wish to share.  Books that are relatable, touch a cord and add a smile. Here, is also a synopsis of the stories so you can build your own if you are unable to find it.

The Unboy Boy

books for kids

A dear friend lent us this gorgeous book, we are utterly grateful. She said the character is your son, and it clearly is. It is a story about a little boy who seems like a misfit to the commonly recognised traits of a boy but is still very brave at heart. It is a book about embracing and accepting who you are. We loved it, yes because we could see ourselves in it. My son loves talking to the sun, stops to smell the flowers, feeds the ants, cares little for football or any sport for that matter. LEGO, aeroplanes and dinosaurs were his world. He is a gentle being and at the same time is very brave and secure at heart. Many friends over the years have told me to toughen him up, and I have resisted all along. The book reiterated to us that being gentle at heart and mannerisms is not the same as being timid or fearful. Simply be and celebrate who you are.

Oh, Boris!

books for kids

An adorable expressive book in which a big bear feels very small when he joins a new school. This book again is about the fact that we are all different, big bear Boris joins a new school where the other classmates are little mice, fox cubs and tiny rabbits. His sheer size scares and keeps everyone away. He feels very small and helpless. It’s an endearing story about looking beyond one’s physical form and embracing our true selves. The little animals discover that it is a blessing to have big bear Boris amongst them and then they all merrily mingle together.

Angelina and the Princess

books for kids

This story seemed perfect for my daughter with delicate illustrations and her favourite ballet. A pretty little mouse Angelina hopes to be a prima ballerina, but disaster strikes as she is given only a minor role in the ballet show. She is so disappointed that she wants to leave ballet school but then decides to work hard for the sake of all her friends in the performance. And an unexpected turn of events turn the tide again and all are happy in the end. A beautiful book about understanding that things don’t always go our way but we can still give our best to whatever we are to do, that itself enhances the whole performance. A wonderful read on picking ourselves up after a fall and building team spirit.

The Ravenous Beast

This book can steal your heart, for its a mad, mad typography, it’s vivid writing style and awesome illustrations. My kids were rolling in peels of laughter listening to it again and again. The book is filled with onomatopoeia, which builds the pace as you read it. One can’t stop till you have finished. It is clearly a book for fun, laughter and imagination. It is on my list of books that have a heart because in all it’s simplicity the book brings out the joy of reading together.

Last but not least, the Timelife series is filled with books that help children understand a way of life. Books about making mistakes and owning up to them, sharing, spreading kindness, and fulfilling your dreams. I think we have read the entire range and loved them all. Each of them is filled with light. I love what do we learn from here section, detailed and wholesome learning.

The best learning while exploring new books has been to not judge the book itself but enjoy each as it’s own, they all have their own flavour. Some simply stay back with you even after you finish reading them.
