Science has always been the favourite topic of study and discussion in our house. It doesn’t take much to impress children and these science experiments had even us smiling and enjoying like our little counterparts. The kids may not always understand the exact principle behind each experiment but the visual impact will definitely stay with them.  It’s also a great way to pique their interest for the science classes that are going to come along in school.

We at KSP have curated 5 easy science experiments that will have the kids clapping their hands in glee and the best part is that you can find most of the supplies at home.

Colour Changing Flower

Supplies Needed

  • Flowers (preferably white)
  • Food Colour
  • Water
  • Glasses

Method

  • Add various colours to each glass filled with water.
  • Dip the flower stem in the coloured water.
  • Leave it overnight and watch the flower petals change colour.
  • Observe and record the changes.

Learning

This process is called transpiration. The xylem in the plant sucks up water like a straw and the coloured water moves up to the petals through the stem. This cool experiment encourages them to think like scientists and helps them track changes.

Candle and Glass Experiment

Supplies Needed

  • Candle
  • Glass
  • Matches

Method

  • Light the candle and place the glass over it. Wait and watch until the fire goes out.
  • Make it fun by using various sizes of glasses so as to observe and record how much time each candle takes to go off depending on the size of the glass.
  • Use a stopwatch to record the timing.

Learning

Fire is a chemical reaction that creates light and heat from oxygen and fuel. A lit candle needs to draw oxygen from the air in order to continue burning. If you limit the amount of air available, the candle’s flame eventually goes out, once it uses up all the oxygen. So with this experiment, the child understands the importance of oxygen.

Float & Sink Experiment

The simple concept of what sinks and what floats can be taught to your kids this way. Grab a handful of items lying around the house and have your kid dip them in a tub of water. Materials like pumice stone, pompoms, leave, twigs, stones, pebbles etc can be used for this experiment.
