My office was buzzing with requests for passes for the Global Citizen concert (who are we kidding, the Coldplay concert!) and really if you are on the other side of 30 queuing up for tickets and waiting for 8 hours for a good spot are all behind you.

So parents who got the tickets, planned and planned and arranged for maasis, naanis and daadis to watch their kids for pretty much the whole day. They pondered on the latest fashion trends, and thought long and hard about what to wear.

When I reached the venue, it was already abuzz with energy and in my head, the parent in me refused to give way to the teeny-bopper- concert hopper. These are the 5 thoughts that I had at the Global Citizen concert, and I suspect every other parent who was there, did too!

  1. How is this generation so well networked! The 6 degrees of separation clearly doesn’t apply to them. They all know each other and clearly, they are so enterprising that they know just how to get to the gold zone without paying a penny. Some friends of the caterers, some volunteers, some contest winners. They all know each other and their lives are all virtual.
  2. How they can so unabashedly speak their mind! They were there to watch Coldplay, and anybody else who came before that was simply not welcome! Not Shahrukh Khan, not Freida Pinto, Nobody! They simply booed any and every person until the person they were interested in came on stage!
  3. If it affects them, they will react! It doesn’t matter if it is in public or behind closed doors. They believe in gender equality and are not afraid to talk about anything in loud, outside voices, be it menstruation, gender pay gap, demonetisation or Chris Martin’s behind.
  4. How I can make sure I don’t embarrass my daughter: In a couple of years we are going to watch these concerts as a family and we will need to keep ourselves relevant and updated with this generation. When I saw so many dads hanging out with their 10 and 12-year-old daughters my husband and I definitely had that conversation about how we will have the kids with us soon. How parenting will be so different in the next 2 years for us. How we will enjoy with our kids more and things we do together as a family will definitely change.
  5. Will my daughter wear this? If you are a parent of a daughter then I am sure this definitely crossed your mind. We hope and pray that our girls will never have body confidence issues and will always be comfortable in whatever they wear. But some of the outfits we saw, were let’s just say, demanded a lot more cloth!
