I was an avid reader. I continued my reading habit until the time my daughter was born. Then motherhood threw me in another direction but, I was quick to make a comeback to my beloved books. I thought that now in my child I will have a reading partner. She will clearly and quickly fall in love with Dr Seuss and then Enid Blyton, making friends with Chacha Chowdhry or Pinky, Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew, picking a few lessons from Anne of Green Gables and Little Women. How naïve, I must have sounded to anyone who knew better!

So many things are vying for the attention of our kids these days and books hardly are ever there at the top.

If you are looking to help your child become a reader, here are tips and tricks from my journey to help you set your little one sail into the world of books and reading this summer.

1. Book in every nook:

I had books everywhere I turned. I got books as a gift from my relatives on my birthday, I remember getting them as return gifts at a birthday party and also being gifted books when I did well in school or at any sports that I played. I already lived in a house full of books.

So, my first suggestion is to let your kids see and find books everywhere possible. Leave them lying on the dining table, or the sofa in the living room or the car seat. Get a few waterproof ones that they can take with them to the bath. Let them reach out to the books. Let them touch them, feel them and even smell them first as the whole point is to not let them get intimidated by the idea of books and reading.
