They say cleaning home with kids is like brushing your teeth while eating Oreos! It is true that no matter how hard you try, your home will never be like the pre-children era. But, if you employ a few tips and tricks, it is not impossible to maintain a fairly neat and presentable home that will keep you sane.

So, here are a few such tips that will help.

Involve Kids

Children right from the age of 2 can take part in daily household chores. They could help in sorting laundry, keeping things back in its place and even with dusting furniture within their reach. Not only does it ease your burden of cleaning your home, it also encourages children to become aware of their environment and encourages them to grow into responsible individuals who care about their surroundings and understand about the dignity of labour.

Make It Fun

I have often observed that if I ask my 3-year old son to do something, he may refuse. But if I request or make it a game of who will do it first or bribe him, he complies. Make cleaning a chore and kids will start dreading it. But make it fun game, and they will look forward to cleaning up the place.

Declutter Your Home

More the stuff you have in your home, more the time you spend organizing them. So, simply discard or donate all those ill-fitting clothes, hardly used toys and all such things that you are hoarding, and make space for things that you actually need.

Buy Minimal Toys

Children need toys. There is no two ways about it. But, do they need a closet full of toys? Nope. Experts suggest that children need just about 10-15 toys rotated frequently so that they dont get bored. Limiting the number of toys not only makes cleaning easier, but also challenges children to use their creativity with playing. Moreover, they start valuing their toys and take better care of it. So, when you say, If you dont keep the toys away, that will be donated, children will actually comply as they know toys are scarce.

Maintain Enough Storage Space

Ample storage space is vital for a neat organized home. There used to be a time when my home was filled with toys to the extend, I had no place to keep them. The sofa and table in living room ended up being the place to store them That is when I discarded a lot of them and bought a few storage boxes and baskets and kept it within easy access to my son. I also bought a small study table for my son to keep his story books, crayons and paper. So, now, after play he knows there is a place to keep the toys and he knows where to look for his crayons or books when he wants them rather than having to ask me every time.

Put Away Before Taking Something New

Children tend to get bored with stuff easily. They also get distracted and jump from one activity to another in a flash. So, enforce certain rules for the sake of your sanity. Request your child to keep away the old toy before taking the new one from the toy basket. Or make it even a fun game. This makes cleaning up after play a lot easier.

Have A Designated Play Area

Having a play area makes it easier to enforce boundaries and play time rules. It helps confine the mess to a limited area and gives children easy access to their toys.

Invest in a Booster Chair

I have often seen moms running around the child to make them eat. Not only does it make the home messy with food crumbs all over the place, but also you are encouraging undesired eating habits.  That is why, it is best to invest in a good high chair or booster chair right from early days and get your child to eat together with the family in the dining room.

Finally, Be Flexible

It is said that when children grow up to become adults, they dont remember whether their home was clean or not, but they do remember whether their home was happy or not. So, be flexible. There might be days when your child is sleepy or hungry or simply not in a mood to clean up. Or there might be days when you are too tired to clean. In such instances, it is best for you to forget about the cleaning and focus on being a happy home.
