With the imposition of lockdown across the world to fight Covid19, the normal life has been thrown out of gear affecting school-going children, university students and their schedules. Homeschooling has taken over every home in 2020 with parents making it the ‘safest and conscious decision’. On the other hand, It is saddening to see kids adjusting in this very situation. Not just children, parents too are facing difficulty in getting comfortable with homeschooling. Personally I found it overwhelming initially but now its become a daily thing, my girl and I are pretty okay.

In Hyderabad, where homeschooling was enforced a month ago, a new wave of non-formal education came into existence. The curriculum was set for the year and assignments & homework was given on a day to day basis with minimal online session with school teachers. Making this very change in our life wherein I am bound to teach my daughter at home lead to many tantrums, no mood for studying, doing things her way, not able to complete homework on time were some challenges to name a few. Having said that, teachers haven't really been cooperative as they wanted things to be done and started blaming parents for not making their children complete the study schedule.

Does Homeschooling Work For My Child?

From my personal experience, homeschooling has its share of pros and cons. This move has bought many changes in my girl’s learning process from classroom-based learning to single-headed learning. It has negatively affected her because of more screen time than actually needed. And since I haven't been able to take her outside to parks and play areas often enough she's been asking for more and more screen time. By far it is the most challenging phase to keep her busy at home as my daughter is a social person and loves to talk to everyone she meets. She really does miss her friends.

According to my ideology, one should believe in and follow ‘what interests the child’ and homeschooling is something that has taught us it's not important to learn through class-based learning only. Though the learning process is quite different the results that are showing are positive. We started some regular things in our routine apart from studying such as educational activities, painting, pretend plays, home gardening, art & craft and book reading which interest’s my child so much. I want to end this by saying we adjusted in this new normal and love our learning process wholeheartedly.
