In this special lockdown series, we at KSP talk to moms, authors and entrepreneurs from different expertise and ask them to share their personal stories of having followed their passion. Kickstarting the series today is the famous children’s author- Natasha Sharma.

When I hear, “Oh, you write for children. Why don’t you think of writing for adults?”, it feels like everyone is suggesting that it is some sort of step up to something difficult. I don’t feel that. I believe in ears to the ground around children of all ages and an ability to look through a child’s lens for a character or a plot makes it all come together.

And it doesn’t always come so easily. I love the challenge of telling a story, creating hooks with characters and emotions while knowing that I am often attempting to hold the attention span of a 3-year-old who must want to come back to the story till their parents are sick of telling it over and over again. And when I can do it, I know I have nailed it.
.
Being a published writer wasn’t in my various plans through college years. When I had my children, I returned to the world of children’s literature while reading to them. It was like the floodgates had opened and I had this urgent need to put it all down on paper.
.
And I guess something things are meant to happen. And I became a writer.

The lockdown has been a mixed bag but overall positive for me. I utilised this time and made it work by finding alternative ways to reach to my audience through #LIVE sessions.
I hear some people are struggling to raise a reader. I would just say.

  • Start them young
  • Put them on your lap and just introduce them to a variety of books with different authors that they can pick from.

I know gadgets and screen time are often quoted as a bane to raise readers but I really doubt that a child will run away from a chance to sit cuddled up with a parent and get his or her undivided attention for the span of a story in an age when we as parents are often even more distracted by our gadgets.
.
Raise a reader because you never know if your child is a dreaming, scatter-brained, children’s book writer just like me!
