Holi is all about celebrating the festival of spring with colours in all ways – dry form, liquid form, with friends & family dancing and frolicking around from dawn until dusk.
For all the past years we were so busy celebrating Holi that a colouring project with kids did not even cross my mind. But this time, since Holi is very close to Spring Equinox, I wanted to create something which could combine together the spirit of Holi & Spring vibes together.
This project is divided into two parts – Process art on waste papers & making craft using them. I usually try to work around projects where I can reuse previously scribbled papers by my son in an attempt to recycle & reduce waste. We did the same for this one. First, we created some paint textures on the paper, then we crafted it into a spring scene.
Part 1 – Holi Process Art Project
Materials Required
- Spray Bottle
- Recycled Papers
- Sponge
- Poster / Acrylic Colours
- Water
Method
- Lay the scribbled art papers on a table evenly without leaving any gaps. Pour some liquid poster paints in a spray bottle, mix little water and then let your kid go wild with it! It gave him the feel of pichkari.
- He sprayed the paper over and over and watched the colours as they absorbed into the paper. New colours formed as the colours bled together. There was also a beautiful “firework” effect that took place from the spray of the spray bottles.
- To add an additional layer to the paint effect we used a sponge, dabbed it in colours and printed it on the paper.
- The final result was a mixture of several textures created through paints.
- Lay it down on a clear surface to dry.
Part 2: Crafting Holi Spring Craft Project
Materials Required
- 2 medium-size Paper Plates
- Acrylic/poster colours
- Popsicle stick
- Fevicol
- Papercutting knife
- Palette
- Paintbrush
Method
- Divide the paper plate into two parts. Paint the upper part in light blue as the sky and below part as green ground.
- Take another paper plate. Cut it in half in the shape of grass. Colour it green.
- Cut floral & leaves in different shapes & sizes using the process art sheets.
- Glue them together by small, medium and big to create layered flowers that looked gorgeous growing on the paper plate grass. Cut leaves in a similar pattern. It totally gave the spring garden vibes.
-
Use the other part of plate to make children drawing. Outline it with black marker and let your kid colour it as per his desire.
-
Cut it neatly and glue it on the coloured plate.
-
We used torn pieces of paper from sprayed sheets to give impressions of holi colour on ground and clothes of children.
-
Stick one of the child on a Popsicle stick.
-
Using paper cutting knife make a small slit in the plate and insert Popsicle stick kid puppet inside it.
-
Then paste the other paper plate on top of it to give an impression of 3D garden.
-
The final version looked like a spring garden in full bloom where kids are playing holi.
