It is a matter of fact for a lot of us that we grew up with our grandparent at home. My sisters and I were also raised by my grandmother, and I feel so privileged.

Just having her around made us feel safe and comforted. More than that, she was the biggest support for my mother. She would be waking us up for our exams, pamper us, taught us things that our mother didn’t have time too since she was working.

In India, the joint family phenomenon is very common but there is a growing trend of nuclear families in tier 1 cities. Neither of them is right or wrong. But here’s a question we must ask ourselves…

Are we depriving our kids of Grandparent parenting?

They teach more directly by telling stories and sharing family and cultural traditions. Grandparents are also in a unique position to reinforce limits and lessons from parents while also listening, wiping away tears and showing their grandchild that they understand.

It’s hard to quantify the impact of the special connection between young kids and their grandparents. Believe it or not, studies have shown that having actively-involved grandparents can help children grow confidence, cope with stress and have fewer behavioural issues as they get older.

Not just the kids but parents too benefit greatly with grandparents around. The lived experience and wisdom they bring can be especially helpful and calming in moments of parental frustration or panic.

Tune into this episode where Mansi Zaveri, the founder of Kidsstopress.com and Hemani Dalmia, the authour of Thammi’s Gift has to say about grandparents. Just loved where she mentioned her mother had gifted her child a library. It is the best gift ever.
