Schools across Maharashtra will be adhering to a uniform age limit for admission for kids in nursery and primary school. The Maharashtra Government has issued a directive on January 21, 2017 which states that the age limit will be implemented so that by 2019-20, only children above six years will be eligible for admissions to Class 1. As per reports, Maharashtra has been following a uniform minimum age limit for school admissions from 2016-17.  The cut-off date for the age limit has now been moved from 31st July to 30th September.

Based on information available, under the new rules which is applicable to all schools (irrespective of management or education boards), admissions need to follow these rules:

Admission to Nursery: Child will have to be over three years for admission to Nursery.
Admission to Junior KG: Child needs to be above four years for admission.
and about five-years-and-four-months at least for admission to Class 1 by September 30 of that academic year.

The reason for this directive is the growing concern that children are being sent to pre-schools and mother-toddler programmes when they are really young.  While mother-toddlers programmes are essential, since it gives children the opportunity to interact with other children, it should be restricted to an hour a day. The idea is to get them used to a school-type environment.

Most school principals and psychiatrists feel that the age limit put forth by the government will help prevent parents from pushing children to school at an early age. Delhi and Gujarat have also adopted similar practices.
