As parents, we often advise our children about how they must pursue their dreams. We tell them to aim sky high and go all guns blazing in putting the efforts to achieve the desired result. But we are also afraid of the risks we would have to take in the process. How far would you go to support your child’s dreams and passions? Frankly, how would you react if your child told you that they wanted a break from school to do something bigger? What would be your immediate response when your avid film buff is not only interested in watching movies, but also in creating one?

Manju and Chinmay Vardhman- parents of two young boys in the city of Udaipur, listened to their children’s dreams- who went on to create a science fiction movie- The Adventures of PalChin Giri, at a very young age of 13!

Pal and Chin Vardhman

True-blooded tech-savvy twins, Pal and Chin Vardhman, got glued to the fascinating world of Internet and all the magic that it can create from a tender age of 2 and a half years. And like most kids their age, the twins from the city of Udaipur, were interested in movies, animations and games. But instead of the usual parents who grab the remote or switch the television set off, their father said something that left the boys thinking.

“Why don’t you let the world watch your animation instead of the two of you watching animation all day?”, he said and that set the ball rolling.

The two young boys started doing serious ground work and surfed various tutorials right from the age of 7 to build their passion. And, within a year, they honed their skills by developing a few animated games. Pal also went the extra edge and did a short course at MAAC- a leading animation institute promoted by Ketan Mehta at Mumbai when he was 8 and a screenplay course at the Mumbai Digital Academy when he turned 10.

Not only did that prove to be a turning point in his film-making career, but he also got a chance to assist the Institute’s director for a short film, for which he wrote the script and even won a prize in one of Mumbai’s cine festivals.

A Break From School

To pursue a passion, as serious as film-making, one would need serious levels of dedication. Which is why Pal and Chin, decided to give it all, in their pursuit for films. They discussed with their parents and took a 3-year break from school! While others would have frowned upon this decision of their parents, the Vardhmans, stood firm in supporting their children’s dreams and that has been a huge factor in their success. The boys spent sleepless nights, working and learning all about animations and movie making.

The decision was made. The learnings were done. And when it came to execution, the talented boys turned their home into a studio. A simple Cannon camera, household lights, baggage trolley, a piece of green cloth and their computer were the equipment they boys used for shooting. The boys, who along with their mother, Manju who formed the main cast, also doubled up as spot boy, lightman, cameraman, VFX & animation designer, costume designer and director!
