The UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) recently announced a new variant of the Aadhaar Card) exclusive for children under 5 years of age. The “Baal Aadhaar” card- blue in colour is issued for children upto5 years and no biometrics info are collected for the same. If you are looking to get your little one an Aadhaar Card (which you should), here is what you need to know.
Who Is It For?
Any parent with a valid Aadhaar Card and a birth certificate for their child (whose age is less than 5 years) can get a Baal Aadhaar Card. The parent whose Aadhaar would be linked to the child’s Aadhaar would have to visit the Aadhaar Centre along with the child for his/her biometric authentication. No biometrics of the child are required.
Updating To Regular Aadhaar
Once the child reaches 5 years of age, a biometric update is mandatory for the Aadhaar Card. Another biometric update is done when the child is 15 years of age. Both these updates are done free of cost at any Aadhaar Centre.
When the child crosses 5 years of age, a mandatory biometric update is required. Pls take the child to any nearby Aadhaar centre for this FREE update. #AadhaarForMyChild pic.twitter.com/l3w6r7KbkD

How Is The Bal Aadhaar Different?
Unlike the regular Aadhaar, the Blue Aadhaar does not contain biometric data such as fingerprints and iris scans since these biometrics change as children grow. Instead, it contains only the demographic details of the child, along with a photograph.
Documents Required For Blue Aadhaar
Birth Certificate: Proof of the child’s date of birth.
Aadhaar of One Parent: Required for authentication and linkage to the child’s Aadhaar.
Proof of Relationship (POR): Birth certificate or another document like a passport to establish the parent-child relationship.
Address Proof of Parent: If the address differs from the parent’s Aadhaar, additional proof like a passport, bank statement, post office passbook, ration card, voter ID, driving license, utility bills, or property tax receipt.
Photograph of the Child: Taken at the enrollment center.
After Child Turns 5 Years
- You can apply for an Aadhaar Card using their birth certificate, a valid school ID, one of the parent’s Aadhaar Card and a registered mobile number. Visit your nearest enrollment centre.
- Your child’s fingerprint and iris scans will be taken at the centre and once the procedure is done, you would get a confirmation SMS, and within 60p days of receiving the SMS, you will receive your child’s Aadhaar Card.
You can use your child’s school ID (Photo ID issued by Recognized Educational Institution) for his/ her Aadhaar enrolment. #AadhaarForMyChild pic.twitter.com/0GQfgQMgUh
