Barbie dolls are making headlines again and this time it is good news!

The world’s best known doll is changing. Gone are the days when she was best known for being light-skinned, blonde-haired, blue-eyed, size-0 (or less) female with the pink convertible and a Malibu Dream House. Now she is a lot more.

Get this – Barbie dolls will now be curvy and tall, with seven different skin tones, 22 eye colors, and 24 different hair styles.

It has taken her 60 years, but she finally will represent what women in daily society look like instead of representing an image that is far from ideal. Barbie dolls have over the years courted controversy from parents for thrusting an image that children want to emulate. Manufacturers Mattel seem to say enough of all that talk! They have reimagined — and recreated Barbie to reflect a new, modern, and diverse generation.

Mattel is calling it “The Evolution of Barbieâ€_x009d_ and using #TheDollEvolves on social media and women all over the world are responding positively to the call. Even the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, tweeted in celebration of the doll’s evolution:

So now girls of various races and ethnicities will finally be able to buy a Barbie that looks just like them. Barbie seems to now finally proclaim we are all different, but strangely we are all the same.

Now if that’s not a reason to rush out and buy your child a Barbie, what is?
