Art is the first step to learning. Your child holds colours and crayons way before he holds a pencil.  Art has a lot more to offer than just being a hobby and an extra curricular class for children.
We caught up with Dihita Vora from KidzArt India to understand the benefits and here are excerpts. Dishita recommends
1. Reduce the stress factor in your kids’ lives- Provide a quiet area where your child can go to decompress from the school day. You should have art materials and simple household items available in a workspace area away from the TV or noisy
siblings so your child can relax by doing an easy art activity.
2. Balance academics by introducing a “right brainâ€_x009d_ extracurricular activity- Allow children to exercise their right brain after a day of left-brain school academics. Right brain activity is stimulated by new events or activities, working with different colors, shapes and sizes as well as listening to music.
3. Develop and nurture creativity- Art is just one of the many creative activities that can help children improve cognitive development, strengthen communication, expressive skills and boost reasoning and organization skills. By being able to
explore their creativity, children can exercise skills which can strengthen their academic abilities and success in school.
4. Allow children to make mistakes- Children often fear ridicule from their peers if they make a mistake. Unfortunately this same fear inhibits creativity and creative problem solving. You need to allow your child to experiment with art allows them to take a risk and experience the creative process. This skill will serve them well in their academic pursuits.
5. Art activities help foster learning, enhance emotional growth-According to the National Association for the Education of Young Children in USA, many child development experts agree that art activities can help children increase their social and emotional development. Non-competitive art activities stimulate social interaction with children – even those who may be shy in some settings.
6. By expressing themselves in an artistic environment, children learn to be creative and become confident in their sense of accomplishment. By learning to draw and experiment with art materials at a young age, children can get a developmental
boost.  They can learn recognizable lines and shapes and learn problem-solving skills.
7. Emotionally, children gain confidence in their abilities and socially connect with other children in such an open and non-competitive environment. Art gives children an outlet for their emotions, which can be difficult to express. Children, especially young children, do not automatically know the best way to express feelings of frustration or anger or joy. Drawing gives children a natural outlet for such feelings.
To conclude it simply, we need to keep the arts in education because they instill in students the habits of mind that last a lifetime: critical analysis skills, the ability to deal with ambiguity and to solve problems, perseverance and a drive for excellence. Moreover, the creative skills children develop through the arts carry them toward new ideas, new experiences, and new challenges, not to mention personal satisfaction. This is the intrinsic value of the arts, and it cannot be overestimated.
