If you are expecting, you probably are praying hard to have an easy and safe delivery. However, gone are the days when natural birthing was the only way out. Today, Bengaluru women are apparently opting for C-section deliveries and the reason behind it is aplenty.
Private hospitals in Bengaluru have seen an alarming rise in the number of caesarian deliveries over the last five years. The spike has been as high as 50-60%, say gynaecologists.

Why Is There A Spike?
The first and foremost reason doctors point out is the lifestyle that women lead today. While staying sedentary is a whole debate in itself, hogging on junk, especially when pregnant is found to be the main culprit.
“Increasing consumption of junk food compromises nutrition. Also, people don’t exercise much, leading to a rise in obesity and diabetes among pregnant women. India is known for its widely reported gestational diabetes”, says Dr. Savitha Shetty, a consultant gynaecologist, and obstetrician at Columbia Asia Referral Hospital.
Also, most of the times complicated cases land in private hospitals, as opposed to government health care centres. Well, while this is one side of the coin, the other side is that patients make a voluntary choice to opt out of vaginal birth.
“Patients and their families are counselled on modes of delivery and suggested the best available options. They then make their own choice after consulting the doctor,” says Dr. Sushmita K, consultant, obstetrics and gynaecologist at Motherhood Hospitals.
As per the data collected by the National Family Health Survey-IV (2015-16), almost 40 percent of deliveries in Bengaluru are carried out through a C-section.
