The festive seasons marks the celebration of joy, the win of good over evil and all the nice things to follow. And that’s what we teach our kids. But what is also essential is to teach them about the joy of giving. The responsibility of us, as parents, towards the society. We need to explain to our kids that not everyone is as fortunate as us, and that’s when a helping hand is imperative.
In a country like ours, where medical advancements are on the rise in one section of the society- the other end of the spectrum, sadly has no access to them. And in the wake of an eventuality, monetary situation and the health front are a trade-off and money eventually wins. When a dreaded disease like cancer strikes, there is always hope for a cure with the progress we have made on the medical front, and the only stumbling blocks are ignorance and the finances for the treatment.
Did you know? Survival rate of child cancer in India is as low as 30%, as compared to 80% in developed countries.
Financial issues & the abandonment of treatment:
One factor that contributed to the survival rate of children affected with cancer is the tragic abandonment of treatment by the low-income families. This abandonment of the treatment due to financial and emotional burden amongst the low-income families is as high as 40%. Mr. Rohan Bhansali, Founder, 1SmallStep Foundation explains how the first month of the treatment is crucial in diagnosing and treating a dreaded disease like cancer and how encouraging and supporting the patients- emotionally and physically can help them in their journey.

#1SmallStepforCancer campaign is an online fundraiser that was launched this September. It’s a 3-4 week fundraising format, with one celebrity each week. Select donors chosen through a raffle will receive celebrities’ personal and autographed merchandise as a token of gratitude to support the cause. Rotary Club of Mumbai Queens Necklace will be matching each and every rupee raised online.
The campaign goal is to create an Emergency Fund of INR 1 Crore to help about 1,000 children complete their treatment and survive cancer.

As a parent, this is a right opportunity to explain to our kids why we need to step up and help those in need. Any disease, big or small can be battled with the help and support of our loved ones. And that’s where we need to step in to show that we care.
