Book Review: 365 Tales from Indian Mythology

I want my child to know who was Shakuntala, why does Ganesha have an elephants head, why does he have a mouse by his side, who are the trinity lords, about Hanuman, Holika, Bhakt Prahlad, Rams exile, Bakasur, Sitas abduction, who was Jatayu, Shabri, Vikram & Betal, about Kirishna and his various forms, etc. I remember soon after we prayed around the fire the evening before holi I read the story of Prahlad to my daughter and made her understand the significance of the festival and why we went around the fire so many times.

I am a firm believer and strongly propagate that kids in India must know about their roots, culture and religion. We are blessed to have so many festivals and so many stories that teach us strong values morals. As kids when we grew up our parents knew enough about culture, religion & values to raise us. To aid all this we also had a lot of mythological programs coming on TV that would help us learn or rather make learning a lot more fun. Remember how our parents made you watch the Ramayana & Mahabhartha every sun at10 a.m. Strangely that fizzled out soon after our generation and then it not many kids knew who was Ashwatdhama or Abhimanyu were.

Its not the child but the parent who is responsible to spread the net of knowledge wider for their kids. You never thought it was important for your child to know who these people are or why we celebrate all the festivals that we have in this country. If we play holi with the child he must understand why we celebrate holi.

This is the reason I recommend this book.

The stories are not in great detail barring a few, but thats ok as far as you get the crux of it. The language is simple, pictures are interesting and it covers most of the mythological stories I know or have heard of. I remember soon after we prayed around the fire the evening before holi I read the story of Prahlad to my daughter and made her understand the significance of the festival and why we went around the fire so many times. In our attempt to teach our kids all things academic it  is also important that they know about their culture. I think reading books of varied backgrounds to your child will add a lot more dimensions than just reading stories which he may be later quizzed on.

Books are a great investment and never age. It doesn’t take me anytime to buy a book versus thinking about how many times or till what age would a toy be appropriate for my child. The 365 Tales of Indian Mythology maybe a bedtime read or an occasional read which you will need to read but trust me as your kids grow older they will take a linking for it if its been around them
