Once your toddler is a little independent, you should engage him/her in activities to build and strengthen their pincer grip. This really helps to develop their hands and fingers muscles especially when they start writing. A pincer grip will help your child pick up small things using his/her thumb and index fingers.

We have put together a simple activity using ribbons that you can do with your child at home. Pushing and pulling on small objects is great for working on fine motor skills and ribbons work perfectly. All you need is a bottle and few ribbons for this activity. A see-through plastic bottle would make it even more interesting and motivating because you can see the ribbon moving inside the container.
You will need
- A Bottle
- A Bunch of Ribbons -of various lengths, widths, colours, patterns and textures
What To Do
- Let the kids explore the activity by squeezing in the ribbons and then eventually pulling them out.
- Hand them a pair of child-friendly tweezers to help them pull out the ribbons.
How Does This Help
The child will develop fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Since they would need to concentrate on the activity it will keep them engaged. You could also turn it into a fun game by asking them to identify the different colour of ribbons or count the ribbons in a particular colour etc.
The activity will keep them busy for a good period of time. So they get to learn things and it will free up some time for you to do other things as well.
