With the monsoon season in India, some doctors are suggesting children take the flu shot to help them tide over it without any hurdles. But is it mandatory? Do our kids need it? This has created panic in the city, and parents are wondering what is the right protocol. The Maharashtra Paediatric task force mentioned that 90-95% of kids remain asymptomatic or have mild symptoms, and this can be managed at home with the right COVID protocols. 

Indian Academy of Paediatrics (IAP) recommends influenza vaccines for children below the age of 5. It is widely available in the market, but it is not yet a part of the national immunization programme. 

Dr. Sanjay Oak, chairman of the State COVID task force mentioned that the influenza vaccine should be advised proactively. However, it is an expensive vaccine, and the government is working on reducing the prices. The real questions that are posed are:

  • Can an asymptomatic child who has tested positive take the vaccine?
  • When and whom should be vaccinated?
