One thing that totally irks any mom is the fact that the little ones have a tendency to put anything and everything they find on the floor in their mouth! Does your child do it too? I spend 24 hours taking care of my little one- but the minute I turn my back, I find his fingers into the mouth and as a mom, that freaks me out! It doesn' t matter what is lying in front of him. It could be a toy, his T-shirt collar, the back of his pencil or his hands – everything finds it's way to his mouth. So obviously what I end up dealing with is stomach trouble. When I tell him nothing besides food should be going into his mouth; he nods, agrees and 10 minutes later I see him wandering about with something sticking out of his mouth. Kids!

So you can imagine how many episodes of stomach issues I have to deal with. I have spent many nights running with him between the bed and the loo, cleaning up his vomit and trying to bring down the fever that is bound to come when there's an infection. The diarrhoea is probably the worst thing that can happen to your child. It weakens them terribly.

What Causes Diarrhoea?

To simplify- our body has good microbes as well as bad microbes. The good microbes are responsible for our healthy gut and it makes sure that our digestion and metabolism function properly. A child's digestive system is extremely sensitive.

So when the percentage of bad microbes increases in the body, the system revolts and the result is watery stools, nausea, vomiting, dehydration, weakness, fever and more.

Making sure that your child has a healthy gut means flooding it with good bacteria – what you eat determines what kind of bacteria enters your gut. The stomach is like a second brain which can affect your child's mood, energy levels and appetite. Feed your child food like yoghurt, kefir, berries, broccoli to promote good bacteria in their little tummies.

When your child is suffering from diarrhoea or vomiting or is generally sick, they lose a lot of water. Keep them hydrated is extremely important. Giving them plain water will not make up for the lost salts. You should give them ORS – Oral Rehydration Solution. You get sachets for that or just mix some salt and sugar in water and get your baby to sip it. It helps replenish what they're losing and keeps them hydrated.  Even if your baby is being breastfed, doctors say that you can give them spoons of ORS to rehydrate them. However, please do check with your doctor before you start anything else for your little one.

Probiotics not only help when your baby is unwell but are great as a preventive as well for the treatment of diarrhoea. So there have been times when we've been on the road travelling and I have given him the medicine so that he doesn't fall ill during our travels.
