Ending The Debate Once And For All: Are Boys Easier To Raise Or Girls?

Here is the thing. It is no secret. We all know it and live it every day. We are just going to go out and say it. Parenting is tough, and you knew that right? Everyone says parenting is tough. They don’t say raising boys is tough, or raising girls is tough.

But then we hear it anyway don’t we? The grass always seems to be greener, (and easier!) on the other side! So here we are to dispel rumours once and for all. This post has been written by two moms. One has two daughters and the other has two sons. Read on for the truth!

When you have daughters you are bound to hear things like, “You have no idea how tough it is to raise boys”, or “Lucky you, you already have a little helper”, or ” You have a girl, you have it easy, they are so calm.”

Uhh! Wrong on all accounts! Here is what raising girls has taught me.

1. Girls are emotional: Everything is about the drama. High intensity drama. Yes, we are talking tears, wails, and puppy dog eyes.

2. Girls need constant attention: Boys have energy but they don’t need that emotional and physical anchoring that girls always do. Girls like the attention and revel in it.

3. Girls are moody: It could be a bright, sunny day and all will be well with the world but not inside the mind of a girl. No matter the age, girls have their moods.

4. Me time: Girls love me time at every age and sometimes it’s hard to pull them out for an activity or class if they are in that zone. The best thing to do would be let them have their time and they will tell when they are ready.

5. Fashionistas: Too many choices. They take their time with skirts, tops, sandals, hairclips and going anywhere is a task. Start getting ready well in advance.

6. Raising a second you: You know your strengths and weaknesses and to see them reflected back to you is downright scary!

Raising Boys

The second time I heard I was pregnant, family and friends insisted the baby be a girl. Yes, they insisted. I already have a son and they hoped this time around I would have a daughter so they could shower me with pretty dresses, doll houses, sugar and spice, and everything nice! But that was not to be!

When you are a parent of two boys here is what your life looks like.

1. Vehicle mania: I am the last person to gender stereotype but boys do love their vehicles. For Christmas my son got a couple of matchbox cars, a puzzle, a board game, and some building blocks. While he was happy Santa was so generous, months down the line, he is still and only playing with his matchbox cars.

2. Boys love their moms: Ladies, whether they are 3 or 63, boys will dote on their moms forever. Daughters on the other hand are daddy’s girls!

3. Do not invest in furniture: There is no point in buying anything pretty for your home, at least until your boys are teenagers or they go off to college. Things will break, stain, tear or simply disintegrate when there are boys in the house.

4. Have your doctor’s number on speed dial: Boys jumping from aforementioned furniture will cause fractures, tears, and muscle pulls. The emergency room will be visited often. You must know the human anatomy and which bone can get fractured because your response in an emergency will depend on it.

5. Movement play is the only play: Colouring, painting, or even creating something has to be combined with a movement. My sons will not sit and concentrate for more than a few minutes, Everything turns into a contest that involves footballs and scores.

6. Smelly socks and toilet humour: Boys stink. They play rough and they come back home like a stink bomb where you wish you could just burn their clothes and run them through a wash cycle. They will wait for guests to come home or pick a social event to crack a joke about their genitalia. Yes, it happens.

So whether you have boys or girls, parenting is a downright difficult job. If you don’t agree with the points above, have it out in the comments below.
