Travelling with kids can either be the best or worst experience of the year for any parents!

If you get everything right and the kids are constantly engaged and having fun, then your family will make memories that will last a lifetime! However, get it wrong and it can turn into the stuff of nightmares! You’ll be stuck with bored, moody, and whiny children for your holiday and that’s not fun for anyone!

Here are 6 activities that your kids will love to try t stay engaged and entertained when you are travelling together as a family.

1. Theme Parks

An easy one to start off with – theme parks are one of the best places to take kids on your travels. Just make sure you pick one that matches your kids’ tastes. A day of rides, rollercoasters, and family fun means that the kids will have a great day out and by the time the day is over, they’ll just fall straight into bed and sleep. Parents might even have the option to spend some time together, which is also important to factor in a holiday.

Tip: There are a couple of downsides though – for the whole family, a day at a theme park can end up expensive, especially if you buy lunch and drinks inside. Do also be aware that during holidays, these places get really crowded and queues can be long. Remember to bring plenty of water, snacks, and sun cream!

2. Skiing or Snowboarding

Basing your holiday around one particular activity is a good idea, as it means that kids will be learning something over the week and have a set routine which is important, which they won’t even realise! Skiing or snowboarding is a good option, as there’s no better time to learn these activities than when you’re a kid (seriously, it’s really hard when you’re all grown up!) Daily lessons mean that your little ones are safe and happy, and once they get to a decent level, you can all head out onto the slopes together!

Tip: Skiing holidays can be expensive, but for families, they’re a good option as it’s easy to find packages which include accommodation and equipment rental. Chalets are also like a home away from home which the kids are sure to love!

3. Nature Walks

If there’s one thing that most kids love, it’s animals. Even if you’re on holiday in a big city like New York City, Paris, or Bangkok, you’re still bound to find some green spaces within the city such as parks or nature walks where you can spot birds and small mammals. All you need is to do a little research before you reach your destination. A nature walk will get kids interested in the countryside that surrounds them and hopefully encourages them to care for the environment too.

Not only will going out on a walk keep the whole family active and fit, but it’s also an opportunity to try out some really cool activities – who knows they may even become hobbies?! Why not take a pair of binoculars or a camera and spot some local bird life, snap up a field guide and identify local wildlife, or with some careful planning, make sure you end the walk at an adventure playground!

4. Geocaching

Geocaching has exploded in popularity in recent years, and it’s a great way of getting outdoors and active without even realising! It also makes for a great family activity. A quick explanation of what geocaching is – using GPS, mobile users search (and hopefully find) something physical or virtual at a fixed point on a map. Lots of kids love their mobile phones, so this is a great way of using them as an educational tool – it’s always good to know how to read a map! Also, if they feel like they’re in charge they’re bound to be more engaged in the activity. Your job is to keep them on the right track and make sure they don’t get the whole family lost (especially in a foreign country). There’s even a reward when you find the geocache – you can swap something small that you have for one of the items in the box!

5. Kids Clubs

Sometimes mum and dad need a break, and although the kids will never admit it, they do too! Especially if your children don’t have siblings, they’ll be desperate for some interaction with kids their own age. Kids clubs are the best solution for everyone in this case! You’ll be safe in the knowledge that your children are engaged with activities curated and tailored to them by childcare professionals. These are especially useful if you’re on something like an all-inclusive holiday or a cruise. A couple of hours at the kids’ club and everyone will get the space they need to reset and start the following day full of energy and enthusiasm!

6. Travelling Games

No matter where you go on holiday with your kids, there’s always going to be some travelling involved. And what’s the most boring part of a holiday? The journey. Parents would be lying if they said this wasn’t the part of their holiday that they dreaded most! It doesn’t have to be arduous and boring though – make sure you have a load of games up your sleeve (or in your handbag, mum!)

Long car journeys pass much quicker if you have a couple of games in mind – and no you don’t have to resort to the tedious I Spy! Makeup Road Trip Bingo cards before you go, try out the memory game ‘I’m going on a picnic,’ or play ‘Spot the car’ if you’re children are budding petrolheads! Those who are travelling by plane can pick up travel-sized board games or activity books before their flights. Make sure you plan carefully so that you’re not paying over the odds for them on the plane!
