We might even get a solution to the evergreen egg or the chicken– which came first problem, but to solve a mom’s dilemma on whether she should be a SAHM or a working mom is unthinkable. But a recent research analysis in America, may just have found a solution to this.

According to a Gallup report, surveying more than 3 lakh American adults, it was observed that most working moms preferred to stay at home and take care of their family. The report also states that this is the same feeling that is echoed by stay-at-home moms as well. What is alarming is that these are the results from a developed economy where though the cost of day care is high it is organised and works well unlike in India.

Here are the findings from the report:

  • The study revealed that among moms employed full- or part-time, 54% said they would prefer to stay home, while only 40% said they prefer to work outside the home.
  • Of those mothers who are currently SAHMs, it was observed that 57% said that they would rather stay at home and 37% said that they would go to work.
  • Among the working women interviewed who did not have children, it was observed that more than 60% wanted to continue going to work outside.

The essence of the study again throws light on the plight of working mothers across the globe and how companies need to come forward and take some drastic measures to help retain their employees. Family would continue to be the top priority for women over career and when it comes to a trade-off situation, it is often a women’s career that takes the beating.

More women-friendly policies such as maternity and child-friendly options need to be provided for women who would like to continue working despite being a mother. And as far as a SAHM is concerned- don’t worry ladies, you know you are doing it right! SAHM or working– every mother knows what’s best for her, the child and the family.
