Look who’s entering our children’s English textbooks soon! The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination (ICSE) Board will now have Harry Potter and TinTin as characters they need to read, study and analyse. Yes, you heard it right!
The ICSE students will now have Harry Potter and TinTin as part of their syllabus for junior and middle-school students. Not just that, graphic novels like Amar Chitra Katha, Asterix comics and Art Spiegelman’s Maus will be a part of the syllabus from class 3 to class 8.

Apart from this, Satyajit Ray’s Feluda, Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes, JRR Tolkien’s ‘The Hobbit’ and PG Wodehouse will also make their way into the ICSE curriculum.
While the old syllabus included Victorian and Shakespearean novels, this addition is definitely a huge and happy leap to help kids stay on par with the new reading norm, while keeping the classics as well.
