A lot of you have asked us for tips to get the kids to swim and here are a few that I've found most useful and practical:

Start them young:

As young as even 2 or 3months. It is easier to get the kids to love the waters before the fear sets in.

Not a member of any club or pool? No worries!

There are many places that have pools open to the public- so you don't need any special membership or annual subscription. Check out this list of public pools in Mumbai, Chennai and Delhi that don't require a membership.

Bond with the kids:

This is crucial. Swim with the kids: Don't sit out. They feel most safe with the parents around and you being in the pool will help them feel secure. Bond with them: Use this time to bond with your kids, with games, rhymes and songs. The touch of water and skin helps them feel secure.

Don’t lose sleep over it:

It's one of the few small problems that will come along while they are small. Save energy for the bigger ones!

Use drum floats:

A lot of us get our kids excited with arm floats and rings but for the older children, the best float to really learn is a drum float.

Comfort first:

Skills and talent come next. The most important thing for us to realise as parents is for the kids to feel comfortable and secure in water than fear it!

Be consistent:

When you start something new with the kids- show them you are committed- try not to have breaks in your schedule or not discontinue it.

Don't rush into it:

It's okay for them to get comfortable gradually and there is no race or need for comparison.
