You would often see me curled up near a window or in the bed with a book (or two!) in hand. That's my way of destressing during the weekends and if I am lucky, on the weekdays too. I didn't start on this habit just because I love books and reading. As a parent, you realise that the watchful eyes monitor everything you do closely and will be imitating them in their own sweet style. If my kids catch me destressing or relaxing on the mobile all day, they are going to want more screen time and that's something you will find tough to negotiate. Read our #KSPSpecial on why excess screentime is actually dangerous for your kids.

How do you inspire and motivate your kids to read more? How do you make sure this doesn't sound like a chore but a fun bonding activity for your kids- right from when they are a little munchkin? Here's what I tried.

  • Dedicated Sundays to reading and made sure I said I never got bored. We would make sure this is how we spent our afternoons.
  • We would have fun conversations about the book we read at the dinner table.
  • As parents, it’s important for us to tell them that some books are difficult to understand. This way, kids don't feel demotivated to ask for help when they are reading.
  • I read books to them even though they can read by themselves now. Trust me- helps us bond better with the kids.

This routine isn't as easy as it sounds. I made many mistakes along the way! From finding it difficult to choose the right age-appropriate books to not reading to my kids, my list was long.
