If I Asked You One Question As A Parent It Would Be This

When you are dead tired and you’ve got loads of work to finish, but still need to supervise everything from music practice to math to projects, and you lay in bed all night wondering, Is it all worth it? It reminds me of this popular song by Baz Luhrmann called, “Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen)” and my favourite lines from there,”Don’t feel guilty if you don’t know what you want to do with your Life.

Dear Parents,

If I asked you one thing you hated most in school or at home, what would that be? We all see movies like 3 Idiots or Taare Zameen Par (coincidentally both are Aamir Khan movies) and promise ourselves we will never do this to our kids. But it's hard to not have expectations from your children, hard to not see leaves sprout from a seed you've been watering and nurturing every day. When you are dead tired and you've got loads of work to finish, but still need to supervise everything from music practice to math to projects, and you lay in bed all night wondering, Is it all worth it? Will my child be what I want him to be? Will she be successful and happy? Is education the only way to get there? In this process of helping them achieve what we think is right we often tend to get bitter, very bitter.

But if life was a two-way mirror where you could see the impact of those words and expectations on your children it would be something like this film below.

I absolutely love the film because it was a mirror to all of us as parents. It reminds me of this popular song by Baz Luhrmann called, "Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen)" and my favourite lines from there,

"Don't feel guilty if you don't know what you want to do with your Life.
The most interesting people I know didn't know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives, some of the most interesting 40-year-olds I know still don't."

So your concern as parents is justified but if I as a parent asked you this one question what would your answer be – What Do You Want For Your Child?
