If you are one of those who always wanted to make a difference but didn’t know how to go about doing it then I am sure this post will be of great help.
Did you know that of every 100 children that enroll to school 70 drop out by the time they reach the secondary level due to lack of correct guidance?
Trishya Screwvala, founder of The Lighthouse Project realized that the education system does not equip children with the necessary skills to ensure that they are job ready upon graduation. This motivated her to begin The Lighthouse Project.
The Lighthouse Project is a Raindancer initiative that connects educated urban youth with children from under resourced communities through one-on-one mentoring in a safe environment. Giving the children and the youth an opportunity to explore a world outside their own. Raindancer is a not- for-profit that seeks to build social awareness among youngsters while simultaneously creating platforms for sustained volunteerism. “Our vision is to inspire and mobilize urban Indian youngsters to actively contribute towards positive social impact, thereby enabling inclusive growth”, says Trishaya.
What:
The Lighthouse Project associated with Salaam Balak Trust, Akanksha, AAWC is a youth mentoring program that connects working professionals and college students with children aged between 9 to 14 years from under resourced communities, through one-on-one mentoring in a safe environment.
What it means?Â
- Mentees are normally street children, girl children from Mumbai’s red light district or children from slum communities.
- All their mentees undergo formal education but lack a consistent and positive role model.
- Thus mentors serve as role models, building their aspiration levels, developing their life and social skills while exposing them to a world outside of their community.
- Both their mentors and mentees learn from each other and have the potential to become socially conscious contributors in society.

Expectations from mentors:
- The qualified, educated mentors normally above the age of 18 years are driven to make a difference and thus have to commit 4 hours a month of mentoring for an 8 month period.
- All mentors undergo a training to work on the life skills and the social skills like problem solving, team working, decision making, self-esteem concentration, conflict management, critical thinking and much more while exposing the children to a world outside of their community.
I would urge all parents who appreciate the role of education in a child’s life to step forward and sign up the Lighthouse project just like me. So go ahead and connect with the Lighthouse project. I can hardly wait for the program to start.
