After my child is back from school and is done with the afternoon short nap, I insist on a quality reading time, that involves her picking up a book in her hand and flipping through the pages- all by herself. She is just 4 and a half and might be a few months short of reading and understanding a story all by herself, but this is a start, I feel.

What’s the book about?

It gives us great pride, that we parents lived in the same era as Mother Teresa and have witnessed the stories of her kindness. This book, suitable for kids 5 years and above, traces the life and times of the young Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu and how she set herself on a mission to improve the lives of the downtrodden and homeless in Kolkata. Raising kids in an era that’s marked with intolerance and growing hatred, across the globe, this book teaches them what it means to love someone unconditionally, and do that for an entire life. As the first in Puffin Book’s series of India’s Junior Lives, this one sets the right example for the books to come.

Why is this book on our shelf?

  • Our children read enough about the princess who never existed, her dreams and her knight in shining armour. How about replacing those fairy tales with this book that tells the about a real life inspiration? We did just that.
  • Interesting trivia and information about the topics mentioned in the story are described in the side-box that helps explain it in entirety to the kids. The illustrations are lovely, and aid in smooth story telling, as well.
