This book released at the time of the pandemic brought about much-needed comfort for the world amidst all the sad and negative things around. Described as a “warm hug” this book has won every award in the past 2 years and has sold more than 5.5 million copies across the globe (as of December 2021)!

“All four characters represent different parts of the same person,” he explained, “the inquisitive boy, the mole who’s enthusiastic but a bit greedy, the fox who’s been hurt so is withdrawn from life, slow to trust but wants to be part of things, and the horse who’s the wisest bit, the deepest part of you, the soul.”

– Charlie Mackesy to The Guardian

The book is different from other ones in the literary space by means of linear narrative or a definite storyline. It is more like musings of 4 characters- each with their own perspectives. The writings are conversations on life and things that the author describes as “important”.

Some of the gems from this book that are playing in a loop in our mind are:

“What do you want to be when you grow up?” “Kind”, said the boy.”

“The greatest illusion,” said the mole, “is that life should be perfect.”

“Home isn’t always a place is it?”

“What’s the bravest thing you’ve ever said?” asked the boy. “Help”, said the horse.”
