About the book:

When Mommy Was A Little Girl by Ponytale Books is the book we are reviewing today.

How many times have you started a conversation with your kids with “You know…when I was your age…”? This book tells your children exactly what it meant to be a child in the 70s and 80s. The experiences of 15 amazing moms and writers who have penned down their childhood experiences in a language your kids will love to read.

And not just kids, parents who would be reading it out to/with the kids will walk down memory lane with this anthology of stories too. From summers at grandparents’ to sibling fights and pranks to celebrating festivals together, to running behind pet animals, I reminisced my holidays with my cousins, and the fun and free-spirited childhood I had back then.

The book deals with the one common thread, but portrayed beautifully with different narratives, from different parts of the country, different cultures and how no two stories are remotely the same.

The book prompted me to share a fun conversation with my daughters about my days as a child, and all the fun things I did back then (some of which these i-Pad savvy kids might never get to experience!)

Here are the names behind the wonderful stories in this book- Arthy Muthanna Singh, Cheryl Rao, Debjani Mukherjee. Lipika Bhushan Uniyal, Madhumita Mandal, Mamta Nainy, Mitra Phukan, Nandini Nayar, Rati Girish, Ratna Manucha, Richa Jha, Rohini Vij, Shyamala Shanmugasundaram, Varsha Pillai and Vidya Nesarikar. And the delightful illustrations for each of the stories is by Abhilasha Khatri.

If you are looking for a breezy and fun read to bond with the kids, you will love this new addition to your bookshelf. Marked as ideal for kids above 7 years, you can also read out this book to the younger ones, adding your own version in between to tell your children how life was “when mommy was a little girl”!
