Reading. It is, like any other skill, not easy to acquire or fall in love with within a day. But with consistency, it is very easy for reading to become a significant part of one’s lifestyle. This logic however, doesn’t apply to kids. Especially in this audio-visually saturated world, it seems impossible to snatch those devices away from their hands. (And eyes!)

Why Do Kids Treat Reading As A Punishment?

Well, we have a bazillion articles on why reading is important for kids and why we must instill this habit in them from the very start. But it is the first step of getting them to even open a book that is the daunting part. Are you buying books that you think your kids will like, because you like them? Being behind their lives to open one, sit in one place and read? Are you bombarding them with the advantages of reading and making them read chapters at once?

We understand why you do that. It is because we want our children to be readers. But these routes won’t help. On the contrary, it will make them hate it altogether. (reverse psychology remember?)

How do we make it fun then?

By making it seem cool and relaxing. You can disguise reading time as a detoxicating time. Ofcourse kids don’t understand that but you can make them understand. Tell them importance of a little me time away from the screen. Make it interesting! How? Just like we parents have become pros at giving them veggies by putting them in pastas and tasty sandwiches. Make it look pleasing.

Here are 6 things to make reading seem fun and not a punishment:

1. Make Some Hot Cocoa:

Anything goes well with some chocolate! Make your kid some tasty and satisfying hot cocoa while they read book. It’s perfect for the weather too! This is a good start, once your kid likes reading, they wouldn’t mind reading without it too!

2. Spend Quality Time Together:

This is a fact that, kids love to spend time with their parents, especially when they share an open and fun relationship with them. One way of strengthening this bond is by reading with them. When they see you keeping down your device and picking up a book, they’ll reciprocate it. (Remember, kids learn more by actions then words.)

3. Same Place-Same Time:

This makes things interesting! Decide on a particular time and place as you and your kids reading time and place. Like in the morning while lazing around on the bed or during the golden hour on the balcony. (And if it’s raining? With some chai? Perfect!)

4. Create A Reading Corner:

A quite corner of the house decorated with some fairy lights, some soft pillows and cute green plants? Yes please! It is sort of like a safe place, a place where anything is possible, a place where their imagination can take flight. Sounds so cool right? Well, it looks cool too! You should try this and see your kid snuggle in, in this cozy corner with a book.

5. Ask Them Questions:

Don’t make reading this monotonous habit. The whole point of raising readers is to open their point of view and make their imagination strong. So, if they finish a book, ask them questions. Questions about what they liked in the book, their favourite character, a new word they learnt, what would they do if they were in the story, etc. This makes them think and read the next book with more understanding and focus.

6. Read Where They Want, How They Want:

Sometimes they might not like the idea of reading at the same place. Let them choose a place to read. It can be on the bed, under the table, while lazing around on the sofa, anywhere they feel comfortable. This could be a fun activity of choosing a different place everyday to read. And you could join them too! (Just mind your head under the table.)

Why Should We Do These Things?

The whole point of doing these things is to introduce reading as fun and relaxing activity than just books and words. Also, giving your kids books that are meant for kids is very important. Or else, they won’t have fun as the books may not be of their level of understanding and ‘Reading’ as a whole might come off as boring.
