Just when I hear kids talking about Angry Birds & Ben 10 and Choota Bheem I wonder how the hell will our kids know all about our great epics and mythological characters which have so much relevance in our festivals, rituals and history. I mean it was relatively easier for our parents to teach it to us with such brilliant shows like Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan & Br. Chopras Mahabharata.
The Sunday ritual of washing our hair with a shampoo(in those days shampoo was a treat and a hair bath on Sunday a ritual literally), wearing new clothes and sitting in front of the Tv at sharp 10 before Ramayan would start. Wow! Do you think if you told your child Sunday is the only day you can watch TV he would actually listen to you? Not sure about that 🙂
I wonder why TV channels & producers are hell bent on recreating that brilliant content with so many expensive versions instead of just playing the classic. There was a certain old world charm about those brilliant actors which is hard to re create now. That nerdy looking Ram and obedient Sita, the powerful aura of Bhishma Pitamah, the voice & tone of Shakuni. Truly something that just got those characters so well etched in our memories. The music and that voice of Samay doing the recap… its still so clear in our memories
My favourite though was Krishna, naughty, intelligent, witty, charming and that of a doer.

I am sure you get DVD’s of the old Ramayan, mahabharat or the other popular ones? And you can obviously watch a few of them on youtube but watching it on TV and a specific time has its own charm. How we were so awestruck about how 1 arrow would become into a 1000 arrows in the sky and they would clash in the sky and fall. Brilliant special effects for those times. Maybe that’s why after Sankranti(kite flying festival in India) we would look forward to making the bows and arrows. For our kids that’s hardly an excitement.:(
The other show that I absolutely loved watching was Malgudi Days. Swami was just so adorable and his little dhoti, neatly combed oily hair and his creativity to mess things up has just stayed with me. Even the tune tana na na na na …. brings back a huge smile on my face.
