My Kids Taught Me That It Doesn’t Take Much To Make A Child Smile This Children’s Day

When I was growing up, Children’s day, and our birthday were the only days we were allowed to come dressed in coloured clothes and give our boring uniforms a break. The mood on the school campus would magically change. Teachers, we were otherwise afraid of, would smile and wish us “Happy Children’s Day!”, the staid authoritative air of the Principal would disappear magically, and even the janitors and custodians would seem less grumpy.

We would parade in our pretty clothes and wait for the assembly when our teachers would perform for us! Teachers would dress up as students and there was always a dance performance, a skit, and a fashion show of sorts! What would follow could only be termed as pure, raucous, school fun! And as though that wasn’t enough we would be in for a treat, courtesy the school as each of us would get a box filled with a samosa, a slice of pound cake, a bar of chocolate and a tetra pack of juice. We loved it all. Year after year, we made some beautiful memories with our teachers.

Fast Forward To Now…

and Children’s Day is no longer an event celebrated in school. Most schools actually give the day off to kids to stay home. My kids go to one such school. They know its Children’s Day but for them its pretty much like any other mid-week holiday. The fun and excitement is clearly missing. And this year we are planning to change that.

Children’s day is about celebrating #BeingAKid and what better way to show your kids how to do that than be one yourself! So this year I have decided that since the kids are off from school, my husband and I will take some time off from work too and just spend the day with them. We are quite regimental about routines, TV time and how many chocolates they can eat through the week. So I’ve decided as a Children’s Day treat, why not relax the rules a little – not forget them, but relax them. Let them have their fun. It’s their day and we’re going to behave like kids to put a smile on their faces and make some memories. Starting with food! This year, the kids get to decide what we eat (There goes my no-sweets diet!).

In our home, chocolates and in particular milk chocolates can be termed a khandaani weakness! None of us can resist Cadbury Dairy Milk bars and no occasion is complete without a few bars.  I’ve been discussing plans with the kids to figure what they want to do on their special day with us. Besides the no phones rule for a couple of hours at least, they had a request which surprised my husband and me.

Something Special

They’ve decided that they want to buy a carton of their favourite chocolates and distribute it to children at the red light crossing near our house. They want these kids to be happy too – it is Children’s Day after all. It takes very little to put a smile on the faces of children.

My kids have been taught that ‘sharing is caring’. It warmed our hearts to know that the kids are growing up with the right values and their hearts are in the right place. So we’re all getting set to share a little essence of Children’s Day with some other kids and put a smile on their faces. If this isn’t the modern, progressive way to celebrate Children’s Day, then I don’t know what is!
