The NCPA has some great summer workshops and films for kids. As part of this year’s festival, they have programmed a handful of surprise events just for kids. In order to stretch the boundaries of performance arts, they also have science and nature on their premises along with film screenings, review competitions and a host of prizes. The workshops are all a couple of hours long, have free entry, and are open to all! These include: 1. Science & Exploration Zone with Kidville on Saturday 12th May from 12pm to 4pm in the Little Theatre foyer 2. Summer Wings with Kidville on Sunday 13th May from 5pm to 6.30pm in the Sunken Gardens 3. In Nature's Wonderland With Sanctuary Cub with Bittu Sahgal for 10 to 12 year olds on Wednesday 16th May from 4.30pm to 6pm in the A.V. Room 4. Green Walk & Talk with Hemant Tripathi on Thursday 17th May from 4.30pm to 6pm all over the premises. Gather in the Sunken Garden before 4.15 pm 5. Short Film Festival with World Kids Foundation on Sunday 19th May from 1pm to 6pm in the Little Theatre 6. Saturday 12th May 12 pm to 4 pm, Little Theatre foyer Open to all Science & Exploration Zone Organized by Kidville, this is a yummy treat for curious young minds. Allow your scientific bent of mind to take the lead as you enter into a world of exploration and excitement. This is a very creative art project that will enthral your children and brighten every room! ———————————————————————————————————— Wednesday 16th May 4.30 pm to 6 pm, A.V. Room Age: 10 to 12 yrs In Nature's Wonderland With Sanctuary Cub Tiger tiger burning bright! There have been several initiatives to try and protect this majestic creature that roams in our forests, one of which is the conservation of the very lands that they inhabit. This evening, renowned environmental activist and writer, Bittu Sahgal will interact with children and shed light on these areas. There will also be a poster making competition being judged by him. But far from being a boring speech, this is a fun workshop with face painters, a slide show and a fancy dress competition with prizes and certificates. So bring your friends and come dressed as an animal you love! —————————————————————————————————————— Thursday 17th May 4.30 pm to 6 pm, NCPA premises Open to all Green Walk and Talk A city like Bombay, doused in concrete still manages to sustain the breathing ecosystem of a natural reserve at its very core. The splashes of green we see on dividers, sidewalks, outside our buildings, within our compounds lend that much life to an otherwise drab lifestyle. This summer, the NCPA encourages you to look around and learn more. Botanist Hemanth Tripathi will take you on a walk around the premises of the NCPA and introduce you to the living flora under our very noses. So come along, learn a few things about plants. After the walk, there will be a sketching competition where the nicest sketch will receive a prize! ———————————————————————————————————— Sunday 19th May 1 pm to 6 pm, Little Theatre Open to all Short Film Festival The National Center for Performing Arts in collaboration with World Kids Foundation will screen over 30 award winning short films from USA, UK, Australia, France, Japan, Germany, Israel, Canada, Brazil, Denmark, Argentina, Romania, Bulgaria, Portugal and Korea over five hours on the 19th. The doors to the auditorium will remain open for free entry and exit as per your convenience. With an objective to promote 'Entertainment with a Purpose' WorldKids Foundation was created in 2007. The first initiative of the foundation was the WorldKids International Film Festival. The WorldKids International Film Festival (WKIFF) is a first-of-its-kind traveling film festival in India, for children and young adults. The festival aims at introducing the present generation to the universality of human values and experiences through the medium of cinema. Some of the films include: Film: When life gives you lemons Director: Todd Gordon Country: Canada Duration: 8 minutes Synopsis: Calvin Adams attempts to outwit some neighborhood kids in a battle to sell the most lemonade. 'When Life Gives You Lemons' is a heart-warming tale about recaptured youth and the vital lesson of selling the best product you can. For Calvin, it's all about using real lemons. Character actor Basil Hoffman ('Ordinary People', 'All The President's Men' and 'Down With Love') stars opposite three child actors with zero experience. The result… is magical! Film: Faith in common Director: Andrew Newell Country: USA Duration: 30 minutes Synopsis: Agnes desperately wants her 12-year old son to know what it means to be a good Christian. But when an Iranian Muslim family moves next door, both families find their neighborliness tested to capacity. Film: Tiny Pupil Director: Komaki Teng Country: Japan Duration: 13 minutes Synopsis: 5-year-old Tong doesn't understand why her kindergarten teacher insists that 1 plus 1 equals 2. She also doesn't understand why people don't have fixed direction like houses. A story from a 5-year-old child's perspective, the world through her eyes is different from adults. Film: Great Expectations Director: Alexei Gubenco Country: Romania Duration: 3 minutes Synopsis: A drying handkerchief is tempted by the noble fly of cranes. Pretty heavily it escapes and with great courage it launches out in an adventure beyond its powers. It reaches out to see its dream come true but some things are impossible. Film: There be Monsters Director: Tom Weston Country: USA Duration: 9 minutes Synopsis: Leaving the safety and comfort of their village, 4 friends set out to climb a mountain. Along the way, they meet an Inn-keeper and his daughter, a Farmer, and even a King in a fairytale castle. At every stop, they are warned about the monsters that lay ahead; but as they proceed, each must decide where his real quest lays . . . monsters notwithstanding Monday 21st May 5pm to 6pm, Little Theatre foyer Open to all Film Review Competition Ever wanted to try your hand out at writing about film? This is your chance to do so. Catch a handful of films in the short film festival on the 19th of May and write your review of a minimum of 5 films. The review must be between 200 and 300 words. On Monday the 21st, well known film critic Khalid Mohammed will speak about the nuances of writing a good review and distribute prizes to the best reviews.So send in your entries with your name and number to [email protected] by 4pm on the 20 th of May 2012 to win exciting prizes!
