A former investment banker who has lived in Mumbai & Delhi settled in Hong Kong as a private banker and author. Her foray into writing books for children was borne out of the need to teach values to her chidren in a non preachy way. Ms Mathur says “ There are so many different Gods, in different forms and many lessons learnt. So if you cant relate to one, you can relate to another and be inspired to pick up their good qualities.â€_x009d_ The idea for the ‘Amma, Tell Me’ series came as a way to introduce her older son, Shiv, to Indian mythology and festivals. Her series include Tell me about Diwali, Holi, Ramayana, 3 part series on Krishna, Ganesha and the soon to launch Hanuman. With the festive season all set to roll through until December I am really impressed with her collection of stories and its relevance to modern day parents. We need to Google everything while Bhakti makes these stories come alive through simple language and lovely illustrations. I think it’s a great concept for parents who are raising their kids away from India where you may or may not have your grandparents telling you all the stories and with all the celebrations. (Though most countries now have Indian celebrations probably at par with what we have in India). The books each have a 2 pronged approach, one with the celebration of the festival and the other on stories of why we celebrate it? The stories are brief and crisp to hold attention of the kids all through the story and I am sure the kids will ask you to read it again.
