Recently we took our little one to Nehru Zoological Park ( Hyderabad ) and trust me she went crazy looking at all the animals. She had just seen them in her books. So you can imagine the excitement when she saw them al standing in front of her. Her beaming smile said it all.

Nehru Zoological Park in Hyderabad is one of the largest zoos in India. It houses around 1500 species. The most interesting thing about it is that they have created open enclosures for various species to resemble their natural habitats. So you can see a lion roaming freely in his enclosure or observe the elephants walking around in the sun.

I wanted to share a few pointers that could be helpful when you visit the Zoo with your little one.

  • They have strategically divided the park into various sections like Butterfly Park, Jurassic Park, aquariums, nocturnal house etc. which adds to the fun. They have 2 canteens as well with various options.

  • One can find shelters and benches easily to sit and rest.
  • They have facilities like battery-operated vehicles
  • For feeding mothers, there is a special mother care room.
  • They have a safe drinking water facility where you can refill your bottles for just Rs.5.
  • They also have also guest house which you can rent from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM which makes visit more pleasurable.
  • The kids can look forward to riding the toy train and different safari tours as well.

Things to remember when you plan your visit to the Zoo.

  • As per my experience, the right age for a child to visit Zoo is when they start recognising animals and can relate from the pictures that you might have shown them.
  • If planning to go on the weekend, try and go early morning as it tends to get very crowded after that.
  • It’s a no-plastic zone. But you are allowed to carry food, water bottles (steel), snacks, bedsheet and have a good picnic there.
  • I would recommend buying tickets for the battery car. It will save a lot of energy from travelling from one zone to another.
  • Carry your foldable lightweight stroller. It takes around 4-5 hrs to cover the zoo. A tired and cranky child is just so difficult to manage.
  • There is a food court inside which is good for buying packaged food, but personally I didn’t like their food.
  • There is a safari inside the zoo which will take you to the restricted areas where you can see tiger, lion (in a cage and 1-2 in the open if you are lucky enough) and Rhinos. We took that but later I realised that same you could see in the open zones as well and perhaps with a closer and better view.
  • It’s definitely must-go place for kids in Hyderabad. And also try to read out all the information boards about species to them. It really excites them to hear these facts.

What makes me sad is when I see people misbehaving with these well-mannered animals by throwing little stones to wake up a rhino to take a selfie or throwing bananas at the bear. We were quite disappointed with the behaviour of the people there. I used it as a way of telling my little one what one must not do.

Did she have a great day? Oh Yes! She sang all the rhymes she knew, starting from ‘ nani teri morni’ , ‘ hathi raja kaha chale ‘ and it continued. Towards the end we were super tired but this girl was our Zoo guide, continuously giving us information about the different sounds animals make. She made me repeat thrice how a duck says ‘ Quack Quack’ and Hiss sound of the snake. So I can truly say she had a super day-out & so did we.
