10 Books To Gift A Reluctant Reader

You are an avid reader, but your child isn’t. or You weren’t an avid readers as a child. But now you want your child to read more.

Every parent I know falls into one of these two categories and is doing everything they can to help raise a reader. But in our bid to raise curious little bookworms, what are we doing so wrong, that they run away when they hear the word “books’?!

  • Don’t make it a case of “If you read, I shall give you xxxx”. You are making the habit a villain and something that kids don’t want to do easily. Make reading a treat, and not a punishment.
  • Surround them with books, but make it less obvious. Travelling? Carry a book. Waiting at a restaurant? Carry a book. Not feeling sleepy? Add some books to your bedstand. The more they see the more they will be prompted to pick up.
  • Don’t go with deadlines and targets. “You need to read X books this month”. The minute they see this way, they are going to liken it to “studying” and they go distant. Remember “reading” for fun isn’t “studying”.
  • Monkey see, Monkey do. Make a comfy reading space and show them you enjoy reading too. Start with short reading times each day to build a habit.
  • Choose the right book. Sometimes, the right book can make a big difference. As they sa, there isn’t a child who doesn’t love reading- it just means they haven’t found the right book yet.

At KSP Book Club, we help parents address this issue with our premium reading programme.
