Summer heat increases sweating, oil production and excess loss of water. This damages the moisture barrier of the skin, loss of elasticity, and makes your skin prone to many other conditions.

Here are the different types of rash and how to prevent them

Miliaria

Miliaria, commonly known as heat rash or prickly heat, is very common during summer across all age groups. These heat rashes affect your babies and young children. These rashes appear due to the blockage of sweat ducts in the folds of skin like the neck, elbow, armpits, or behind the knees. They are usually red or pink granular lesions. Rashes can be prevented by wearing light cotton clothes and keeping your children cool. Frequently wash the groin area, neck, armpit, and knee folds with cold water and pat dry.

Coxsackie virus

Hand, foot, and mouth disease caused by the Coxsackie virus is another common skin disease in children during summer. It is contagious and can spread among children in daycare, school, or summer camps. Fluid-filled blisters vesicular blisters to papular lesions appear on the hands, feet, elbows, knees, and buttocks. These rashes are non-itchy and may heal by themselves in a few days. The most annoying is the blister inside the mouth making your child more cranky because of soreness in the mouth. A soft non-spicy diet and numbing gels are advisable to improve oral intake. Keep your child hydrated with lots of fluid.

Folliculitis

Folliculitis, hot tub rash, or hair root infection is another distress your children can face this summer. Bacteria from unclean pools and hot tubs get into hair follicles on the skin and cause small pus-filled blisters. This condition can be prevented by avoiding unclean swimming pools and not allowing young children in spas or hot tubs.

Insect bite rashes

In order to beat the heat, people keep their doors and windows open, inviting more pests like mosquitoes. These pests multiply and increase in number during the warm climate. There is a high chance of mosquitoes feeding on human blood. Children are easily affected by them. Hence, insect bite rashes are more common during summer. These pests are not backyard nuisance as they may cause deadly diseases. Use more mosquito repellents, and mosquito’s nets to protect your child from blood-sucking flies.

Sun rays

The harmful rays of the sun damaging and tanning the sensitive skin of your children can be avoided by using child-appropriate sunscreen lotions while sunbathing or in the swimming pools. Make your child drink a lot of fluid, eat nutritious food and keep their skin healthy and cool this summer.
