Did you know that there are more than 14.4 million cases of childhood obesity reported in India, as of 2017? Shocking, right? Childhood obesity is real and is happening and if we as parents neglect the warning signs at an early stage, we are only putting our children's health at stake here.

Junk food- one of the primary reasons for childhood obesity is something that needs to be curbed at an earlier age, and that comes with responsible parenting. Experts have time and again emphasized on why healthy eating should be taught to kids from a very young age and why we, as parents, need to believe and practise the same.

Fun ways to teach your kids about healthy eating

As a parent, ask yourself if you are exposing your kids to the right foods?

Celebrity Nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar, who has been pretty vocal about the role of junk food in a child's life, lists down the basic FAQs that cross parent's mind regarding childhood obesity on her Facebook timeline.

As a parent, here is what I learnt from Rujuta's post:

  • Remember to make mealtimes enjoyable for everyone in the family. Rujuta explains why we need to talk about food with regard to culture and climate and not just about food groups.
  • The society around us plays a huge role in promoting junk food and curbing a child's free right to exercise and play. This is something that needs to change in the bigger scenario.
  • Raise kids to be more eco-friendly and care for nature.
  • And I liked this part most- why celebrity endorsements shouldn't be taken too seriously and idolised. We need to teach the kids to draw the line somewhere.
