My older daughter was discussing religion with her mother recently. My wife told her that different people ‘speak’ to different gods. The four-year-old then asked what religion she belonged to. Her mother replied that that would depend on which god she wanted to speak with. Without missing a beat, my older offspring said, ‘all the gods’. For someone who is a committed member of the SBNR (Spiritual But Not Religious) clan, that reply gladdens me.
We live in a world today where the separation between religion, personal liberty and politics is steadily diminishing. The goings on of one northern Indian state are an indication, as is the drowning right-wing narrative coming out of the West. While not intending to make a political comment, it’s important we don’t shy away from talking about religion as the contentious issue that it has become in my family’s daily lives.
