This survey comes in the wake of the recent maternity bill passed by the Government that entitles women in private and government sectors to avail six months of paid maternity leave. The battle and the unanswered questions remain, though. There are various factors women choose after/during childbirth when it comes to pursuing their careers. Childcare, obviously becomes the top priority and people who can manage work-life balance and who choose to, go ahead in their career path. While others, who again, after personal reasons or influencing factors prefer to take a break or give up their careers.

Impact of the Maternity Bill:

Stronger child care laws and flexible working conditions remain top priority for women to resume their careers after delivery. But another recent article, shows how this new maternity bill could be misused by some companies and employers.  The article refers to an analysis that cites how discrimination against pregnant women was widely prevalent in the corporate sector. Pregnant women would often report getting unexpected poor performance reviews or termination letters and are called for human resources counseling for a variety of fabricated reasons, including bad attitude. This would force them to discontinue work and resign voluntarily. Another shocking aspect the article states, is the impact on hiring of women in the workforce for averting future troubles. The maternity bill, though seems welcoming, has no solutions to protecting the rights of the female workers in the rural and the unorganised sector.

Solution?

So, what exactly is the solution? Clear defined policies that protect the right of the employees are mandatory. Employees, especially women, need to be briefed about their legal rights in the company and an easier legal system within the organization will help save time and trouble. Another thing is to introduce the paternity leave to level the field among the employees and not give the bosses an upper hand to recruit male workers, exclusively.

So mothers? What do you think about this survey? What was your decision after childbirth? And what were the reasons you decided to leave your workforce? Let us know in the comments below.
