Your weight makes a lot of difference if you’re trying for a babyoverweight or underweight. If you’re overweight, your body releases hormones like insulin which prevent the ovaries from releasing eggs every month. If eggs are released in some cases, the quality of the eggs makes it difficult for you to get pregnant. So you need to bring your weight down if you’re on the heavier side.

If you’re underweight, that can also affect you adversely too. The fat content in your body influences your menstrual cycle. So if you’re underweight the hormones tell the brain that your body doesn’t have enough fat for reproduction and you won’t ovulate properly.

Men, this does not get you off the hook. Being overweight or underweight affects your sperm quality also. So lose or gain weight accordingly and improve your chances.

Revamp Your Diet

Healthy eating is for both you and your partner. Try to avoid eating foods that are high in salt, sugar and preservatives. Instead, stick with fresh fruits and vegetables, paneer, dahi, proteins like fish and chicken. These are rich in vitamins and minerals which is what you need for great reproductive health.

Have a bowl full of full-fat ice cream. Yes! you read it right. A study has shown that two daily servings of whole milk or whole milk products like cheese and yoghurt protect against infertility. Now don’t go overboard with that ice cream tub just yet. Also, add small amounts of ghee to your diet. This is a good saturated fat for your body. If you are having a full-fat product, cut calories somewhere else in your diet to compensate. You need to maintain your weight and stay healthy.

Exercise Regularly

A sedentary lifestyle could be a cause for infertility, so some form of exercising is extremely important. For overweight women, moderate – high exercising with weight loss will have a positive effect on fertility. But the key is moderation. High intensive exercising should be avoided as it tends to interfere with menstrual and ovulation cycle of a woman. We’re sure you don’t want anything changing that!!

You could also try some yoga. Yoga not only reduces stress and relaxes you, there are also some yoga poses that are said to help you conceive faster. You can try the following asanas – Viparita Karani, Bhujung Asana, Bridge Pose, Butterfly Pose, Kapalbharti Pranayam and Bhrahmi Pranayam are some of the asanas recommended. These asanas increase the blood flow to the pelvic region and stimulate the endocrine system.

When you are ready to conceive, start taking a prenatal vitamin every day. Make sure it includes folic acid. Folic acid is very important since it protects the baby against brain and spinal defects. Folic acid is only effective during the first few weeks after conceiving so taking it when you start trying, prepares your body for what is to come. General multivitamins can also increase your overall health which increases the likelihood of conceiving.

Supplement your diet with folate-rich food like spinach, rajma, lobia, all the dals, dry fruits, beetroot, citrus fruits like oranges, bananas and bhindi.
