Street Food Recipe | Mumbai Style Vada Pav With Chutney

Which is your favourite monsoon snack? We love a Mumbai style vada pav with a hot cup of chai. Today’s recipe is an authentic one that is perfect for when hunger strikes at 5 PM.

Monsoon is that season, when your heart and brain, by default start feeling good. When it’s raining heavily outside, your heart definitely wants some delicious, mouth-watering food. In order to calm your craving for food, we are here to share a monsoon special recipe. 

Homemade Potato Vada Pav is a drool-worthy monsoon snack and this recipe is easy and super tasty. So let’s get started.

Ingredients: 

  • 6 boiled Potatoes 
  • Finely chopped Coriander 
  • Curry leaves 
  • White Urad Dal 
  • Mustard Seeds 
  • Cumin Seeds 
  • Garlic Cloves 
  • Turmeric powder 
  • Oil for frying 
  • Green Chilli & Ginger Paste 
  • 2 katoris Besan  
  • Asafoetida/Hing
  • 1 Lemon 
  • Salt to taste 
  • Water

Method

  • Heat oil in a kadhai. Put the mustard seeds and let them splutter.
  • Add the urad dal and let it cook for a few mins
  • Put the curry leave and after a minute put the hing powder
  • Put the garlic paste and the chilli paste and mix well
  • Sprinkle in the haldi
  • Mash the potatoes and add the lemon juice & salt and mix to combine
  • Put the mashed potatoes in the kadhai with the tadka
  • Add coriander leaves and mix well
  • Roll the potatoes to make medium-sized balls
  • In a bowl add besan, salt & haldi and mix it with water to form a batter. Make it thick but of pouring consistency.
  • Once the oil is heated test it by adding a bit of the besan batter. 
  • Then start dipping the potato balls in the besan batter and start making vadas. 
  • Dip the potato balls in the besan batter
  • Heat oil in a kadhai and fry the aloo balls
  • Allow them to cook well for 3-4 mins at least until it’s dark yellow in colour 
  • Your vadas are ready to be served with any chutney of your preference
  • Slice and butter the buns
  • Put some red garlic chutney and green coriander chutney
  • Place the crispy aloo vada in between the bun slices

Tip: You can additionally add only besan batter for frying and making some fritters and add those to the Vada pav which gives it a good crunch like the roadside Mumbai Vada Pavs. 

Red Garlic Chutney : 

Ingredients: 

  • 100 Gm Garlic 
  • Salt 
  • Red Chilli Powder 
  • Peanuts ( optional ) 
  • Hing/Asafoetida  
  • Oil 
  • Cumin Powder 

Method

  • Peel & grind the garlic after adding salt. 
  • Add a pinch of hing, red chilly powder & cumin powder. 
  • Then add two spoons of oil and mix it well.
  • Make a thick garlic chutney. 

Tip: For vada pav garlic chutney   – you can add a few peanuts also. Mix it’s all well and store it in the refrigerator.
