Every day, my child gets excited and points towards the moon and the stars. But now, she's going to see something new and different. She's aware of the fact the moon changes its form but associates it as pure white She jumped to the idea when I told her that she could see a red moon? This year it's called "The Super Blood Wolf Moon".

Sadly, it isn't going to be visible in India- but that shouldn't stop you or the kids from knowing more about this celestial fun, right?! Here's how you explain to the young minds!

Kids always want to know everything about their Chanda Mama and here's when you can explain, how and why does the moon change its form, and make this event a story that they imprint in their minds.

You may want to sit your child down and explain the science behind everything. Trust us- they will love it when you give them these details.

What is the Super Blood Wolf Moon Eclipse?

The moon doesn't have any light of its own. When the earth moves between the sun and the moon, blocking the sun's rays from hitting the moon, the surface of the moon takes a reddish glow instead of going completely dark. This reddish glow is why it's called a Blood Moon. This Super Blood Wolf Moon is going to be special because several astronomical events are going to be happening at once and they are:

Blood Moon – when the sun, moon, and earth are aligned together – shielding the sun's rays and because the moon takes on the red tint – it's called a Blood Moon.

Super Moon – It is called super moon when the moon appears much closer to the earth.

Wolf Moon – The full moon phenomenon is named by the Native Americans and medieval Europeans, after the howling hungry wolves in winter.

When and what time can you see the eclipse?

As we mentioned earlier, this Super Blood Wolf Moon isn't going to be visible in India. It will be visible across North and South America, parts of eastern Europe and eastern Africa on January 20th 11.41 pm ET that is around 10 am on January 21st in India. But there are websites that give you a LIVE streaming of the event in the time mentioned above so you know you don't miss it!

The next one will be on 26th May, 2021 that will be visible from North and South America, and East Asia

Random facts:

  • It is the most awaited eclipse because of the trifecta of lunar activities — a total lunar eclipse, a super blood moon, and a wolf moon and the whole thing is being called the 'Super Blood Wolf Moon.'
  • It will be the last total lunar eclipse until May 26, 2021
