Surajkund Mela 2018: Here’s What You Should Look Forward To

The Surajkund International Crafts Mela is one of the biggest fairs in the country and receives over a million visitors every year. Families visiting the mela with children below 14 years would have to get the minors registered at a special desk set up by the police. College and school students can enjoy a discount of 50% on their entry tickets on weekdays provided they produce valid ID cards at the time of purchasing the Surajkund Mela tickets.

Winter in Delhi is synonymous with a lot of things and one of those things is the Surajkund Mela. The 32nd Surajkund Mela is starting and the kids and I are getting all ready to go have some fun.

What Is The Surajkund Mela?

The Surajkund International Crafts Mela is one of the biggest fairs in the country and receives over a million visitors every year. It's being held in Surajkund, Faridabad from 2nd -18th February 2018. The Mela is organized by the Surajkund Mela Authority & Haryana Tourism in collaboration with Union Ministries of Tourism, Textiles, Culture and External Affairs. The theme for this year will be a ‘child-friendly event’ and they are aiming to highlight zero tolerance towards child rights violation,  Uttar Pradesh has been chosen as the theme state and Kyrgyzstan as the partner nation. There are over 20 countries and all states of India participated in the fair this year.

One of the main reasons for this mela every year is to try and revive the dying arts and crafts from around the world. The Mela is seen as a custodian of the traditional crafts and skills that are fading away due to cheap machine-made imitations,

What Can You Look Forward To

  • There are two Chaupals (open-air theatres) being set up. A large number of renowned national and international folk artists and cultural groups will be performing at both the Chaupals. The kids will love the colourful displays, puppet shows, songs and dances.
  • There are designated places for amusement, adventure sports and joy rides to make it a must visit event for the young.

  • Every year children get lost at the mela. So this year the U.P Government has set up a special booth where child tracking system through RFID tagging would be implemented. Families visiting the mela with children below 14 years would have to get the minors registered at a special desk set up by the police. Using the trackers they can locate any child whose entered the mela.
  • This is the perfect opportunity to introduce your children to different cuisines from around Indian and around the world. The multi-cuisine food court promises to be a treat.
  • College and school students can enjoy a discount of 50% on their entry tickets on weekdays provided they produce valid ID cards at the time of purchasing the Surajkund Mela tickets.
