A visit to the amusement park and enjoying the water rides with friends and family is every child’s dream. But just like most services across the world that are staggeringly difficult for people with physical disabilities, amusement parks sadly, remain off the list for the cornered few. There are places in the world that offer one or two special rides in water parks/amusement parks for these people, but the number is far and few. And that’s what makes this particular waterpark in Texas, all the more special. Here’s why.

Morgan’s Inspiration Island in San Antonio, Texas is the world’s first water park this is completely accessible by children and adults with physical disabilities. The sprawling water park was recently inaugurated in June this year and has won the hearts of people all over the world for the gesture and the planning behind it.

What makes Morgan’s Inspiration Island special?

  • In collaboration with the University of Pittsburgh, this water park has come up with uniquely designed wheelchair called PneuChair- that does not use batteries but compressed air. This low-cost, waterproof and viable option comes as a blessing in disguise for guests to use these chairs with ease (and there’s no fear of it being damaged).  These wheelchairs recharge in a record time of less than 10 minutes and can sustain for as many hours as the regular ones in the market.
  • Also since locating people with difficulties in a crowded environment can get difficult and stressful, the park provides high-tech, waterproof GPS enabled wristbands to children so that they can be easily tracked and attended to if necessary. We must say that’s a very thoughtful gesture.
  • The water is temperature controlled so that it is sensitive to the needs of those using it and is systematically filtered and recirculated, making it absolutely safe for the guests to use this water and not worry about their health.
  • The best part- the entry is free for children with disabilities. The people behind this innovative water park have been clear in projecting Morgan’s Inspiration Island as a place that’s people-friendly and less crowded giving these children their much-needed space.

Lovely gestures like these give us a hope and glimmer of a better world for our kids tomorrow.
