Play dough is one of those toy box essentials that refuses to grow up. I enjoy playing and moulding play dough into animals and shapes as much as my little one does. Anyone who has played with it can tell you that you could spend hours squishing, flattening and rolling it. But there are so many things to hate about store bought play dough too! They dry up way too soon and you know your child will touch it and put his fingers in his mouth. Do we know what goes into store bought play dough?

So this summer why spend on play dough when you can easily make your own? This is one tried and tested recipe that only uses natural ingredients and is way better than store bought play dough. Kidsstoppress tells you how to make your own play dough in just a few, simple steps!

Ingredients:
2 cups plain flour (all purpose)
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1/2 cup salt
2 tablespoons cream of tartar
1.5 cups of boiling water
Food colouring (optional)
Few drops glycerine (optional- adds more shine!)

Method:
1) Mix all the dry ingredients that is the flour, salt and cream of tartar in a large mixing bowl.
2) Make a well using your finger and add all the wet ingredients that is oil, glycerine and boiling water.
3) Stir continuously until it all comes together and forms a sticky clump.
4) Allow it to cool down then take it out of the bowl and knead it vigorously for a couple of minutes until all of the stickiness has gone. * This is the most important part of the process, so keep at it until it’s the perfect consistency!
If it remains a little sticky then add a touch of more flour until just right or if too dry add more water.
5) Divide the dough in equal parts and add your favourite colours to it. Knead it until the colour is evenly absorbed by the dough.
You can store this play dough in an airtight container for at least 6 months. If you live in a humid climate you might need to store it in the fridge and out of sunlight.
